Marina Nasso Beard

Marina Nasso Beard is a multi- media artist living and working in South East London. She was born in Milan and grew up dividing her time between the UK and Italy. In her early twenties she travelled and worked in Europe. This adventure exposed her to other nationalities and cultures which fuelled her passion for the arts. She returned to the UK to study Art where she earned a Batchelors Degree in Fine Art from Camberwell University of the Arts, London.

Statement

Marina’s childhood emigration has given her an underlying sense of ‘being other’, of being a foreigner to her environment. Hers is an inquiry, proposing a viewpoint, a journey to try to mark significant details which draw attention to seemingly small and transient moments and to celebrate them, sometimes as an act of defiance to all that is experienced as divisive. Rather than seeking to answer, the aim is to invite curiosity.  Her influences include Canaletto, Turner, Constable and Rembrandt as well as more modern artists like Cy Twombly, Barbara Rae and Bill Viola. Her work focuses on social context, “our personal history, geography, environment, and semiotics, all of which play a vital role in shaping our understanding of the world. Rooted in the ideology behind traditional Vanitas still life and memento mori, I hope to document and record the tension between the mundane and the zeitgeist, in the hope of recording a common, shared experience”.
